Since I updated my iMac to 10.5.6 I am having constant problems with applications that hang. It happens to all sorts of apps out of iLife, iWork and other non-Apple Applicactions, too. Especially, when trying to attach a file in a particular program (lie e.g. uploading a photo in a safari browser window, attaching a file in Mail or others. But it also happens just like that out of the blue when using the particular app.
Force quit does not help! I need to force quit twice before the hanging app actually closes its WINDOW. The app itself does not close properly and remains visibly open in the dock (white light), but can not be accessed any longer. A forced system restart by pressing the ON/OFF button on the iMac is required every time. That is pretty annoying!
I tried fixing permissions, although I believe it has nothing to do with that. Verified my HD, which appears to be ok.
I also started my Mac in single user mode (cmd/s at startup) and fsck -fy, received the message 'FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED', repeated the procedure and received the message 'SYSTEM APPEARS TO BE OK'.
Can someone help me out withi this? Thank you.

Hello,
How much available disk space is there?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough disk space can cause apps to crash/freeze.
How long since you've performed any maintenance?
Mac Maintenance Quick Assist
Get Onyx for Leopard; http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
'A multifunction utility for Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel). It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock and of some of Apple’s own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.'
Check the boot disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.Click Verify Disk.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear. Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Verify. If DU reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Click MacintoshHD and click Restart.
Check your hard disk’s S.M.A.R.T. status: Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.Select the disk in the list at the left, and look at the bottom of the window for a field named “S.M.A.R.T. Status.” Make sure you the word: Verified if not, the drive may be failing.

  • I am new to Apple and recently purchased a Mac Mini with a keyboard, trackpad and mouse attached to an HP monitor. I have been using it for a few weeks with no problems and updated to Maverick 10.9.1 without problems. I have since added photos to iPhoto and now it seems that when I have been using my Moneydance program or my email it freezes and the round rainbow ball appears so that I can't do anything in that program unless I switch the whole computer off and start again. Is it to do with Maverick or one of the programs?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter 'BOOT_TIME' (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • My Mac keeps hanging the circle keeps going round and round the have to manually shut down. Now sometimes on start up it gets to my opening screen and the circle keeps going round and round I have to shut it down manually I can't even force quit.
    Thank you

It is usually called the Spinning Beach Ball Of Death. It means that an application is not responding. You can either - Click and hold on the application's icon in the dock and a menu will pop up with the option to Force Quit. Select that and the application should quit; if not try selecting it again and it will often quit the second time or -Hold down the three keys Command (cmd), Option (alt) and Escape (esc) together. This will show a Force Quit menu window. Select the offending application from the list of running applications and click the Force Quit button. Click on the Red close window button to dismiss the window. Other than that you may see the SBBOD if the Mac is running slow for some reason - loading a large video or something like that - but it should clear once it has caught up with itself. Another option to try is a good Disk Utility for the Mac. If you optimize your hard drive, it should help speed up your Mac and stop the rainbow beach ball from re-appearing. Or just try another mouse. Mouse could be broke or mouse drivers are outdated.

  • hi everyone, newbie here, bought a mac mini solo cos i loved its looks and functions. however, a couple of moths later, the darn thing keeps hanging on me. its very frustrating! can anyone advise, cos i dont know what's wrong. thought it was overheating, so put it on its side, turned on air-con, but its still hanging very often.
    any help is apprciated! thanks.

how long have you had the mac before it started doing this ?
certainly a reinstall wont hurt, i would do that and then see.
best to copy all your documents / music ect to your ipod and then do a complete re-install without saving any files, just incase.
    if it solves it, great.
If not at least you have eliminated software issues, then best call apple and see if they will sort it out for you, or take it to your local apple store and see the guys at the bar
let me know how you get on

  • Downloading the latest upgrades for Mac 10.8.2 keeps stalling. I still have Firefox 17.0.1. the system has tried many times but the process just hangs.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See 'Creating a profile':

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • I have a situation here where the Xserve I set up running Mac OS X 10.6 Server keeps hanging after a while. I have re-installed from the scratch thinking it was the third party software I used in importing users and groups but the problem is still there. I checked the error log of directory services and the only error I can see is 'Network Transition Occurred'. I read some fix on the internet as regards to the spotlight re-indexing being the likely cause. I have enabled the privacy setting of spotlight with the hope that this will stop. I am still waiting because I implemented this some couple of minutes ago. Do anyone know the solution to this issue in case the spotlight setting does not work. I am kinda frustrated with this issue.

    There are many possible issues.
Network transition, to me, sounds like there is something happening that is changing the network settings. Disable any wifi if you can. Check and double check all network cables, static IP addresses, DNS, make sure there are no rouge DCHP servers on the network, or multiple routers, etc...
I would check to see if there are networking issues.
Also, if you're running Time Machine (TM), try turning it off for a few days (of course, have a good solid backup actively running, just not TM, which isn't really the best for a server anyways for various reasons.
    Cheers,
    Daniel

  • Hello,
I have a .Mac account and running Mail with Tiger on an Intel iMac. Most of the time it works just fine. But lately it's been driving me crazy. My two other mail accounts (one POP and the other IMAP) work just fine. But .Mac keeps hanging, refusing to connect to the server. When I try to quit Mail, I can't. I have to force quit it to be able to move on. If I restart the computer, things are OK. But within a couple of hours, it happens again! Any help would be appreciated. (I've checked and my connections are correct [password, etc.]; I can access my .Mac account from the Web, but, increasingly, not on Mail.)
    Again, Thanks

  • I have continuous problems with my iPad Mini, and it is getting worse! Newstand application keep pausing or crashing, websites keep hanging first time in but then open fine the second time, and I have problems with applictions crashing. Has anyone experienced similar problems and any suggestions?

Has the device always behaved this way? Did this start as a result of an update to the iOS software? If the problem is that bad, you should probably restore the iOS software and then restore from a backup. If that fails, restore as new and rebuild the device. If that fails, it's time for a trip to an Apple Store to let them have a look at the iPad.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and Safari (5.1.9) keeps hanging/crashing. I'm afraid I'm not very good with these things so I'll just have to tell the story...
It's happening when I start up Safari, either the home page (Google) doesn't fully load and the pinwheel appears, or it loads but as soon as I try to search or use bookmarks the pinwheel appears. I'm unable to quit Safari, open or close Finder or any software, and it won't shut down normally either. I've tried using Cmd-Option-Esc to Force Quit but the pinwheel appears again and nothing happens. The only option left is to do a hard shut down. After repeating this 5 or 6 times it eventually lets me use Safari, but will almost always hang again unexpectedly at some point during the day. I know this isn't the best way to deal with it but I don't know what else to do!
I'm sorry if this question has already been asked and answered, but because I don't have an error report I don't know whether my issue is the same and don't want to start messing with things when I'm not sure what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. The unexpected hanging and freezing started while I was running Leopard and an older version of Safari. I tried to back up and reinstall the OS but my optical disk drive wouldn't read the disk, so I had to take it to an Apple store where they couldn't find anything wrong but installed Snow Leopard and hoped that fixed the problem. It didn't, and it's since started happening on start up, as described above.

Open Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairing, you will need to use the install disc(s) that came with your Mac.
Help here > Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Hi guys,
One of my accounts keeps hanging on me when I try to do certain things (like open a pdf document or open any of hte MS office apps), and I have to restart the whole computer. I was told it is a software problem. I have tried updating my software, and the problem seems worse than ever; in the past I could wait 5 minutes for word to load, but now it just refuses to load.
    Any suggestions?
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks for your advice; how do I go about doing that?
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and enter ~/Library/Preferences/ as the folder's location. Select the plists for those applications, and then drag them to the desktop. If the system works properly without them, drag them to the Trash and empty it.
How do I transfer all my files and preferences here?
To transfer over your files, move them to the /Users/Shared/ folder, and then log in from the new account. Drag them from the /Users/Shared/ folder to your current account's home folder while holding down the Option key. You should not move over your preferences until you've isolated which file or files is responsible for your issues, as it may cause the same problem to occur in the new account.

  • My Macbook keeps hanging, it happens every few minutes, sometimes it can happen 3 or 4 times within a minute.
I've used Etrecheck and copied the results below.
Paragon NTFS seems to be a problem, I thought i had already uninstalled it but apparently not. I have tried reinstalling it and then uninstalling it again, but i can't get rid of it. Any ideas?
Also, what is the system launch daemon?
Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive. Disk utility says it is fine.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive.
Yes. The drive could be failing. First and foremost make sure you have a current backup of your hard drive.
Next, as John pointed out uninstall MacKeeper and keep away from it from now on. Linc Davis posted excellent instructions for removing MacKeeper:

    in response to susanfrommapleton
    [DocumentBodyStart:69ceddb2-c4fe-4b04-be3c-91348427076e]
'MacKeeper' is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: 'MacKeeper' has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the 'decrypted' files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The 'MacKeeper' application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag MacKeeper from the Dock or the Launchpad to the Trash.
☞ Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.
As for the HD errors Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk several times. Also repair disk permissions. Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to check for the HD errors.

  • Why my MacBook Air keeps hanging on System Preferences and Settings whenever I attempt to open it ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Hello - I am extremely frustrated because I just received my brand new iMac in the mail (27' i7 2.93GHZ / 2 TB HD / 4GB 2x2 SDRAM) and my applications keep freezing.
Let me give an example -
I keep trying to open iPhoto so that I can import and export photos from my other Mac and my iPhone. Just about any time I do any big upload, the whole iPhoto freezes on me and I have to force quit.
Another example (the one that is bugging me most right now): I am trying to paste 3 pages of text into a word document in Microsoft Word, and every time I attempt to do this, Word freezes.
I understand these are both rather minor in the grand scheme of things, but I just got this fricken thing and I'm hoping I can take some measure to avoid my applications freezing... Do I not have enough memory for running these simple day-to-day tasks? I was thinking about buying 2x 4GB OWC memory to make my computer 12GB instead of 4GB. Please help - I'd love to hear any opinions. Should I take it in? Or is it a simple fix? Even when I first booted my computer there was lag getting the introduction information to load.

    Dang...
I was hopeful that this would have solved the problem. Unfortunately, it must be a software problem of some sort. I reset my PRAM(?) and did the disk utility cleanup or whatever it is called. I do appreciate you giving your 2 cents. Does anybody else have any ideas? Microsoft Office is still freezing up when I try to paste something from the internet -- Oddly enough, it isn't happening when I'm posting text from some websites, but is from others. The firewall is turned off, so I don't think its a security issue. Please help! I need some way to put my academic transcript in a word file so that I can email it for reference, so this is kind of urgent! Thank you.
Should I try a software update?

  • Hi All
I received my brand new iMAC today - having never had a MAC anything before - decided to switch as fed up of hanging, viruses etc on PCs and also need more multimedia options.
Have set it all up it keeps hanging - for no reason i click on force quit and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't even do that - I am totally confused it has done it to me on MAC Office, iCalc, i photos, i tunes etc etc
Do i have a dud machine am i doing something wrong???? Please help.
    Cheers

    Kazzaboobers,
Welcome to the forum. Chances are you don't have a dud. In case you haven't read the manual I would recommend doing so before playing with your machine, you will be surprised what you learn.
Also when you mention the machine is hanging please describe with a little more detail so we can understand exactly what you mean.
You are covered by 90 days for free telephone support, if the problem persists take advantage of the support and give Apple a call. In the rare event you did get a dud they will replace the machine within 14 days of purchase.
Last IMHO it is a good idea to get AppleCare, this gives you 3 years of phone support and an additional 2 years of warranty. You can find it online (Amazon for example) for less than Apple charges.

  • Acrobat X Pro v 10.1.10 (Mac OS 10.9.3) hangs when trying to save some PDF files, after opening or after commenting. Applies for any of the Save options. 'Watch' then 'spinning beach ball' appear and application is indicated as 'not responding.' Mac OS Preview has no problem with the same files. Files can be displayed with Acrobat, just not saved. I would prefer to use Acrobat's commenting tools to mark up the document.

'Mac Office 2008'? You must mean Microsoft Office 2008. Try posting in the Microsoft forums here:
